Pot Luck Lunch Sunday, October 4
Why is it that sharing a meal with family so richly transcends simply meeting our dietary needs? There is something about gathering together to partake of food made by the hands of people who love you to show us in a very basic and primal way that He is among us. Sharing a meal with family is ordinary in a very extraordinary way. As we intentionally focus in October on seeing God in the ordinary acts of our lives, it seemed important to share a meal among our church family. Therefore, on Sunday, October 4, immediately following the 11:00 a.m. service, we will share a traditional potluck lunch in the gym. Please plan to bring your favorite family dish and enjoy a special time of fellowship. Think diversity when planning your dish as we will be serving only what we each bring - green bean casserole is wonderful but 25 of them and a couple of dessert items might not be completely filling.
"When God Winks at You" by Squire Rushnell
In church vernacular we call them epiphanies, those moments of awakening when you realize God is present and moving in your life. Squire Rushnell has coined the phrase “godwink” to describe those moments when he and countless other people have seen God’s hand revealed through the mundane and homely occurrences of our lives such as finding a dime on the path when one was needed or realizing God is answering your prayer through the miraculous healing of your infant son. He writes of the concept: “Like most people, I had always sensed that there was no coincidence to coincidence. But, if that was so, I asked, what do you call it?” He goes on to write, “The best thing I’ve come to understand, is that more than a name for the experience, godwinks help people to feel a tangible connection with God...providing them with concrete stepping stones to build a lasting relationship with the Almighty.” His book, When God Winks at You, will be our gift to you during our month-long emphasis on seeing God’s Hand Revealed. We are offering one free copy per family and if you would like to purchase more, they will be available for $5. We will start handing them out on Sunday, October 4 at the pot luck lunch after the 11:00 a.m. worship service and will continue to make them available throughout the month. Our hope is that you will read this book in October and discuss it with some small group in the church: maybe your Sunday School Community wants to have a book party where you gather together to talk about it; it might be the November curriculum choice for your South Main at Home group; or you may just want to have a dinner party to enjoy fellowship and discuss the book. There are moments when Rushnell may push your understanding of providence and how God works in the world too far or perhaps not far enough – all good material for conversation with your small group. Our hope is that this book will be one piece in our emphasis to look with new eyes to see God’s Hand Revealed in our world and in one another.
We are going to learn about the lives of some great Biblical characters:

In a moment of sincerity and candor, the Psalmist confesses, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” This October, we, as the family of God in this place, will join with the Psalmist in practicing the ancient spiritual discipline of Scripture memory. Together we will try to commit Psalm 139:7-10 to memory. Most of us have some memory of this from growing up as children in Baptist Training Unions or in Royal Ambassadors, and this practice still remains healthy and life-giving for the Christian living in these days. By committing to gather those sacred words into our heads and hearts, we invite the Scriptures and Spirit into our inner life for an ongoing conversation throughout the day. Let us hear what Christ has to teach us through the word we so dearly treasure deep within our souls.
