Children's Choir Coordinator, Melissa Scott
Melissa Scott joined the South Main music ministry team as Children's Choir Coordinator in the fall of 2005.
The mother of two wonderful girls, Audrey, age 3, and Ava Catherine, age 1, Melissa is a very gifted musician who has a great love for children. She is married to Dr. Steve Scott who is regularly heard playing the Steinway Piano in worship.
Melissa has an extensive background in public school music (over nine years) at all levels. Several years ago, Melissa came to Houston (and South Main), where Steve was completing work on his M.D. While in Houston, she worked with the Houston Children's Chorus and Steve Roddy, who had high praise for her work. She also worked as Children's Choir Coordinator at First Presbyterian, Houston. Steve and Melissa weren't in Houston long before they were off to Seattle, Washington, where Steve did his residency and Melissa completed her Masters Degree in Music. While in Seattle, Melissa continued to be active in the music scene, working with the Northwest Girlchoir and the University Presbyterian Church in Seattle where she coordinated and directed the Children's Choirs. After completing her Masters Degree in choral conducting, Melissa taught choral music at Juanita High School in Kirkland, Washington. Once back in Houston, Melissa returned to the position she had held previously at First Presbyterian (Children's Choir Coordinator).
Golden Jubilee Year of Graded Choirs
at South Main (1955-2005)
This year, Melissa has coordinated a children’s choir program that has begun the second half century at South Main of actively teaching children to sing on pitch; feel a steady beat; learn songs, hymns, and spiritual songs; and generally teach children the wonderful love of God for them through the divine gift of music. First organized in 1955, the children’s choirs were then known as the Cherub, Celestial, and Carol Choirs. This year, Melissa has coordinated Music Activity (3- & 4-yr. olds), Music Makers I (Kindergarten), Music Makers II (1st & 2nd Grade), Young Musicians (3rd - 5th Grade), Children’s Handchime Choir (2nd & 3rd Grade), and Children’s Handbell Choir (4th & 5th Grade).
