This spectacular duo piano concert features pianists Dr. Stephen Scott and Ms. Cynthia Blackwell. Steve is well known at South Main where he is often found sharing his musical talents as well as serving as a young adult Sunday School leader. Ms. Blackwell is a degreed musician and has served in music leadership positions at St. Philip Presbyterian and First Presbyterian Churches in Houston. The program with two grand pianos will feature repertoire arranged for two pianos: "Hoedown" and "Saturday Night Waltz" from Aaron Copland's Rodeo, George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, "Symphonic Dances" from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, Variations on a Theme of Paganini by Lutoslawski, Recuerdos (3 Latin American Dances) by Bolcom, three hymns by Nielsen & Young, as well as two spirituals.
Tickets are not required, and admission is free. People attending the concert will have the opportunity to make donations to support Operación San Andrés (OSA), South Main’s mission in Collique, a shanty town on the outskirts of Lima, Peru. In addition to regular medical and dental mission trips from the USA, OSA personnel in Peru provide an on-going holistic ministry for children and families in Collique. Daily programs include lunches for children at the José Galvito preschool, an after school program with meals and academic enrichment for 3rd and 4th grade children, and programs to improve family life for the impoverished people in this community.
This truly will be “an evening to remember” with a wonderful concert program and an opportunity to support South Main’s mission work in Peru. Childcare for pre-school children is available by reservation. Please call Susan Moore in the church office (713-529-4167 X302) prior to November 12. A reception in Fellowship Hall will follow the concert. Light refreshments will be served, and original Peruvian paintings and native crafts will be available for purchase.
