Albert "Perk" Perkins, Jr. is 101 years old and was the first person to join South Main virtually during the pandemic on March 29, 2020. Perk is blessed to be in this church family with his daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Thomas Coker, granddaughter Catrice Mays, and great-granddaughters, Caroline, Elaina, and Callie Mays.
Perk is in the Power and Light Sunday School community. He loves to join the ROMEOs (Really Old Men Eating Out) for weekly Wednesday lunches. Prior to moving to Houston in 2018, Perk lived in Cleburne, Texas and was a member of a photo club where he won many first place ribbons with his photos. He still takes and edits lots of photos to this day.
Perk learned to drive at age 12. He has always loved to fly and bought his first plane and flew it home before he obtained his pilot's license. Perk made his first parachute jump (tandem) at age 90 and his last at age 95 and loved it!
Perk and his wife made many mission trips all over the world. He loved to do carpentry and was a part of the Baptist men who worked to build churches in Mexico. He was an accomplished carpenter and also learned to do chip carving. He also sang in the church choir for years.
Perk worked in the shipyard building ships. He could read the blueprints and was so important in building ships they didn't want to let him quit to join the Army. Finally someone said, "Well, if you don't show up for work for a month, they'll fire you." And that's how Perk got into the Army Air Corps.
