Worship Participation Accessible to All

Growing up at South Main in the 1960s and 1970s, I have vivid memories of being in the sanctuary and worshipping with people of different ethnicities. I never remember a time when there were not people of a variety of cultures actively involved in our church. Our church was open to people from different backgrounds in a time when it was not popular to be so.

However, our physical space inside the sanctuary limited people with physical disabilities from fully participating in our worship services. The recent renovation of our sanctuary shows another commitment to the welcoming nature of our church.

By making the new platform a space where all people—and especially those with physical disabilities—can participate in the worship service, our church has made a statement that worship is not for the able-bodied only. In this beautifully remodeled space, there will now be generations of children who will grow up and know that worship participation is available to all.
