Moments of Generosity

The phrase “a-ha” communicates the idea of epiphany in shorthand. Oprah Winfrey has used the term a good deal in the past, and I’ve heard she's planning an “A-HA” tour of some sort next year. I expect it will be a big deal.

A moment of epiphany is a big deal, especially if such a flash of revelation and clarity then makes a big difference in your life.

In the coming weeks in worship, and in this space, we will be telling some stories about our epiphanies, those flashes of clarity, related to the notion of Generosity.

While advancing our generosity isn’t the only measure of whether we’re making progress as followers of Christ, it’s certainly one of them and a pretty reliable one at that, given that it involves our whole approach to life. Seeing generosity for what it is—and recognizing that being more open-hearted, more giving, and more joyful about releasing all we’ve been blessed with out into the world—is something worth celebrating together. That’s exactly what we are aiming to do. Through these Generosity Moments in worship and Generosity Stories in this space, we want both to elevate the virtue of gratitude for God’s blessings over our lives and to nurture a more robust sense and culture of generosity at South Main.

If you’ve had any sort of revelatory moment that triggered a new kind of vision of generosity in your life, we’d love to hear about it. Let us know.

In the meantime, watch this space and be prepared in worship to hear a series of stories about these difference-making epiphanies, these break-through moments of clarity and understanding that have led to a heart-expanding growth in the generosity of some of your fellow church members. You’ll hear about the joy this has brought into their lives and the Gospel ministry it’s made possible.
