Our Lenten sermon series continued last Sunday focused on the consequential question we are examining in the weeks prior to Holy Week and Easter. This past week we focused on the import of the three languages Pilate used in creating the sign posted above the cross at the crucifixion. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, The King of the Jews.” Written in Hebrew, the message represented a fulfillment of the covenant set out in the Old Testament. Written in Greek, it became a universal message offered to the known world. And in Latin, the language of the Roman Empire, it was expressed in the language of truth and justice. As Holy Week draws near, continue to meditate on the question we’ve taken up this Lenten season—“Who is Jesus?”.
