Each Wednesday night during Lent, we will move together through a remarkable book called The Gravity of Joy: A Story of Being Lost Then Found by Rev. Angela Gorrell, PhD. The group, led by Barbara Kirk, will read this dynamic, yet practical book as a Lenten practice and each week consider questions designed to prompt stories from those in the group. You’ll be encouraged to journal as you delve into Rev. Gorrell’s compelling writing, which will take you on a journey touching on the pain of grief and days in the desert, even as it moves inexorably toward the promises of Easter, of undeniable joy and the glory of redemption. There is no need to sign up. The book can be purchased here.
What was it like for the ancient Israelites to live faithfully within a chaotic world, one surrounded by idol worship and warring peoples? How did Israel hold onto the hope that God keeps His promises even as they struggled to remain faithful? Such questions resonate with our lives today and remind us that there is much to learn as we reflect on the journey of ancient Israel toward the fulfillment of God’s promises. At Midtown Midweek Bible study this spring semester we will consider this journey as we explore the book of Judges. This week we look at Judges 13–14 and the story of Samson.
This spring we are hosting a special series for Dishin’ with Dolores. Each week a guest with a unique behind-the-scenes insight into South Main Baptist Church comes to share a few stories and invite you to “Ask Away!” Join us on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM in The Commons for laughter and fun and be ready to ask away! This week we are joined by Hortencia Guiterrez.
Dishin' with Dolores starts with mingle time from 6:30 – 6:40 and conversation from 6:40 – 7:20.
Stories help our faith come alive as we learn to practice a redeemed imagination. Lauren Gordy and Sarah Villaseñor lead a book club on Wednesday nights that invites us to imagine our faith anew through the lens of story. The book club is reading A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving and meets in Chafin 105 from 6:30 to 7:15 PM. You may purchase A Prayer for Owen Meany here.
The New Year is a great opportunity to try new things, learn, and meet new people! Regardless of experience, all are welcome to sing and fellowship as we grow musically and spiritually with one another.
