Our sweet group of first graders received their Bibles on Sunday, September 24. This is an exciting day for them as they commit to read the Word of God. They do not commit to doing this alone; we walk alongside them and teach them during WDS club small group time. Each week we encourage the kids to bring their bibles with them to church. During small group time, we pull out our bibles and open them to the story we are learning that week. We talk about the difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament and what each of them teaches us. We refresh our memory about which number (the big number vs the little numbers) is the chapter and which number is referring to the verse(s) being read. We encourage them to highlight and underline the stories, something that sticks out to them while reading, or something they may not understand so they can go back and see what God has taught them and what He is continuing to teach them. The kids will take their bibles home and read with their families so that Monday through Sunday they continue to grow toward an authentic and lasting faith in Christ. One of the reasons I love giving bibles to our first graders is that at the very time they are learning to read, they also learn the importance of reading the Bible.
