The First Nowell

Of Cornish (English) origin, The First Nowell was likely composed during the early modern era (c. 1350-1800). The song tells the story of the angels, who announced Christ’s birth, and the shepherds and wise men who came to adore Him. The birth of Christ—the first Nowell—was exclaimed from the heavens and settled over shepherd’s fields and spread to the Far East where the magi lived. Overcome by joy, they traveled to see the Christ Child and pay Him homage.

Over 2000 years have passed since that first Christmas night, and God’s gift to humanity remains powerful and awe-inspiring. This Christmas, let us remember the final verse of this hymn:

Then let us all with one accord
sing praises to our heavenly Lord
who hath made heaven and earth of naught,
and with His blood mankind hath bought.

Born is the King of Israel! Praise be to God for the gift of Jesus and the joy that comes from salvation.
